Some factoids for ya...
What the heck is a Chonk?
A Chonk is a 2D cartoon created on a 3D surface (the wood). It's more hefty than paper and lighter than stone, it's dimensional and tactile and CHONKY!
Where do you get your wood from?
I try to use repurposed wood every chance I can! 1/2" plywood has been reclaimed from warehouse materials and sometimes fb marketplace or craigslist. If I'm extra lucky a neighbor has scraps they send my way. All 1/8" basswood starts out new, but I reuse 'oppsies' when possible. You may find some engraving on the back of a pin or clock box because I hate wasting wood!
How long does it take you to make a Chonk?
I get asked this a lot - a few times a week. It's very hard to say. I tend to do things in a color assembly line fashion. I'll cut a sheet of pigeons and mothmen. Then do all the same grays first, then all the white, then pink, etc. Inking in the lines happens next. Then the highlights and chatter to make them have personality! However, in order to keep on loving what I make and not getting bored, I'll sometimes cut a sheet of varied Chonks and paint them individually because I just want to that day!
The Chonk I got was a little stinky. What's up?
Ah, the sweet sweet smell of acrylic gloss spray! It takes a few days to dissipate. Sometimes a Chonk is fresh off the workbench and comes to you without the hoped-for time to air out. If you have a dry spot in the garage or porch, set it out for a day and it should be much better. Oh, and don't lick it.
The pug I got from your web store doesn't look exactly like the one I got - what gives?!
Everything is hand painted. No screen printers or decals. I hand paint every one! This means that each item is unique! It's an original piece of art, so to speak. If you need it to be exactly what you saw, then you may have to travel to Pike Place Market or find me at a weekend makers market and choose then exact one you'd like.
What does Aidan do while you're at the market?
He's likely napping with his brother Bogo. His favorite spots to nap are on top of the dryer, on the loveseat, or sitting in his basket on a plastic bag he's stolen. He also likes to steal plastic forks, straws, toilet paper tubes, and milk caps. His other favorite hobby is begging for food after playing tag with his bro.
How long have you been doing this?
Drawing - since I could hold a crayon. Although there was a good decade I did not draw at all for multiple reasons including numb hands from carpal tunnel and good ol' fashioned fear. I moved to plywood cutouts somewhere around 2015 because it was more forgiving than a pencil and the saw vibration was somehow soothing on my hands. dogear productions started in 2023 and I began vending at Pike Place Market in July of 2025.
I see these little dogs with signs all over the neighborhood. Is that you? Why?
When I'm not making art I'm gardening or providing mental health therapy (I hit my 20th year in 2025!). I'm not one for huge crowds at protests and donating only goes so far. I only have so many hours to provide 1:1 counseling time, too. I wanted a way to get something positive in front of someone's eyeballs. You never know if the person you smile at or hold a door for was looking for a sign to keep on keeping on! Making positive messages, and sprinkling them around for anyone to find, seemed like a good way to go about this. Even better if they move it to a new location and keep the good vibes going!
